Tuesday, October 2, 2012 - Boy, talk about needing some time. The is a village Burgundy, it is 13 year old, and is only now getting ready to drink. On opening there was a strong hint of mushroom, a classic sent of a mature (or past prime) Burgundy. But this blew off very quickly (10 minutes at most). Once it did this revealed itself as a very nice Pinot Noir. Lovely earthy nose but no hint of brett. Medium light brick in color. In the mouth excellent length for a village Burgundy with a nice mix of fruit and tannin. Really an excellent village Burgundy, better than many 1er crus. In it's youth (and I purchased it in 2003 when it was already 4 years old) this wine was hard and unpleasant. Last time I tried it, which was about 2006, or 7 years old, I had pretty much given up on it. But now it is a lovely wine. Does it make sense to wait 13 years for a $25 bottle of wine? I don't think so, and I have a pretty big cellar. But I am glad it came around. And it is a good lesson in both how long Burgundies can age, and often how long they need to age.
