Sunday, August 17, 2014 - I have a young cellar with most of my Bordeaux from '05, 09 and 10 vintages with a few left from '03 so after reading recent tasting notes on the Poyferre I selected this for our 34th anniversary to savor at home. This had been stored in my wine cooler since my wife purchased this in 2006 for our 26th anniversary so she was pleased to see the bottle. Opened for a decant and tannins were very tight so let it sit for 2 hours before we started sampling.
At dinner of grilled lamb chops with a red-wine reduction the wine was still very dry and the tannins were strong suggesting that this one needed a lot more time in the cellar. I also was put off by a bit of what I think was Brett on the nose. Usually I don't mind a bit of the funk but in this case it was distracting. We did our best to swirl and coax this wine but she remained pretty closed for the entire evening. Oh well that is why it helps to have a couple of bottles in your collection so you could always hold that next one for a few more years, which this one definitely needed.
