Sunday, August 17, 2003 - I have seen some good words for this sparkler and figured it was worth a try. Starting from the nose and moving to the palate this is definitely in the fruit-driven mold rather than the yeasty/toasty mold. The bubbles are bigger than in the fine French sparklers and it doesn’t have quite the mouthfeel, but it doesn’t have the same price, either. The label mentions green apples and grapefruit. I don’t get the green apples part but there is a definite acidic and slightly puckery grapefruit flavor to it. With a cap it even lasted into the second night without suffering. Tasty enough for what it is and with the novelty value of this sparkler coming from New Mexico it wasn’t a disappointment. The premium for the vintage bottling is not that much, roughly five dollars and might be worth a try. But New Mexico – who’da thought?
