Saturday, July 4, 2015 - There is no denying that Quilceda Creek is much more than a regional superstar when it comes to producing fine Cabernet-based wine. The Columbia Valley Red Wine is their "entry level" offering. The 2008 iteration is a blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 1% Malbec. Opaque ruby and packed with black fruit, it adds nuances of anise, loamy earth, pickling spice and dried herbs. There is significant structure here, with fresh acidity and substantial firm tannins. The wine's listed alcohol is 15.2% but remains a non-factor as long as it is served at an appropriate temperature of approximately 60-65° F. Solid in the middle and impressively long on the finish, this bruiser is still a baby. While I wouldn't hesitate to open a bottle now, I suspect that it will see some improvement with patient cellaring. I have accordingly revised my drinking window for this wine. Drink now-2025.
