NV Jacques Selosse Substance

Community Tasting Note

Wednesday, July 29, 2015 - Dinner at Batard: A bottle disgorged in July 2002. Poured blind. Vanilla, raspberry and custard on the nose with hints of caramel and citrus on the back-end. There is a great richness in the nose, but it still shows signs of youthfulness with some oxidative qualities. I had a feeling this was a Blanc de Blancs from a high quality producer, but thought from the richness this was a top-notch Mesnil producer. After finding out this was Selosse Substance, I assumed this was from one of the more recent disgorgements and was seriously surprised this was from 2002 and even more surprised when I found out this was one of the bottles stuck in the WineCare / Hurricane Sandy fiasco, so at least one positive data point.

8/12/2015 - Thanks for your note. Surprises with wine never, ever cease. Sounds like you had a great sip. We still have two more bottles and will wait another few years...do you think it will lay down?

8/12/2015 8:10:00 AM - Buzz, you still have two more bottles from this disgorgement date? I've personally found with Selosse there to be some bottle variation, but I'd probably drink one in the near term because it is really delicious right now. There is a great balance between the freshness, oxidativeness and secondary notes. I'd then save the next bottle for a few more years. But it really comes down to personal preference.
