TWO DAYS LATER: I pulled this back out of the fridge and tried again. I paired with with lamb and what do you know: it wasn't too bad. I guess it took a strong gamy meat to match the tannins. I think with a long decant and a good pairing this is acceptable. This reminds me of a big tennat.
