Friday, November 27, 2015 - I wrote one of my very first tasting notes on this wine almost 8 years ago. I am not sure whether it is my tastes changing, or whether the wine has not aged all that well, but while still good, I did not quite enjoy it as much this time round as the half bottle all those years back. The nose struck me as rather noticeably sweeter and darker than I normally associate with Clos des Papes, with a slightly cooked character to its notes of cherries and berries, along with dried violets, garrigue and touches of earth and spice. The palate also came across as very sweet at first, even needing more acidity as it attacked with plenty of sweet cherry and berry flavours. Thankfully, it opened up quite nicely with time, showing more typical Clos de Papes hallmarks of elegance and clarity in its fruit, along with bits of spice and earthy mineral lending a bit of complexity and nuance. While it had a nice sense of shape and structure to it, I felt the wine was a tad drying at the finish and would perhaps have liked just a bit more freshness. Otherwise, it was actually quite nice. On the evidence, I think one should start drinking before the fruit fades behind the more drying elements.
