Tuesday, February 14, 2017 - Allowed to breathe in glass 4 hours before tasting, with bouquet sampled every hour. Clear deep garnet color. An austere, closed wine, with some signs of maturity including reticent notes of cigar tobacco and saddle soap. Only after 12 hours of air did some fresh sweet black currants, blackberries, and black cherries finally emerge, along with graphite and unobtrusive mild vanilla and spicy oak. On the palate this seemed balanced and seamless, but hard and angular, with fierce tannins. Held up fine under vacuum stopper in refrigerator for four days, and showed best on day three. Overall the wine has evolved nicely since a previous tasting ten years ago, but still at least five years away from optimal drinking.
