Friday, March 10, 2017 - DInner with Isaac & Lil (Pine Close): Very, very nice - this is fast becoming a classic GPL. Double decanted and opened for a few hours, this took time to get going, but when it did, it had a beautiful Pauillac nose, with ripe cassis, pencil lead, cedar wood and just a gust of tobacco spice. Very attractive. The palate though - wow. It still has the sheer structure and balance to age for decades, but the 2005 super acidity and mouthcoating tannins of youth have mellowed tremendously, and started to integrate with the wine's beautiful velvety depth of dark cassis and fine menthol and tobacco spice flavours. This was just dark, deep and lovely though, and supremely polished - really classy, yet so approachable and delicious, with a wonderfully full, complete finish to boot. There were little complexities like dark chocolate and savoury olive tapenade peeping out at points, but the fruit was still rather primary. Still years and years to go then, but this is really something. One of the best GPLs I have ever had.
