2014 Jean Foillard Morgon Cuvée 3.14

Community Tasting Note

Friday, June 29, 2018 - Bitterly disappointing. Really funky. Smelled bretty so I decanted it. It didn’t blow off. In fact, it gained more funkiness and developed intense VA. Full on nailpolish. Not that enjoyable to drink. One of the few times I have felt duped by the price of a wine. So disappointed by this. Sad.

6/29/2018 6:47:00 AM - Possibly, but in my experience VA and Brett are not bottle variation issues. I’m very tolerant with integrated Brett and “lift” in VA affected wines. The bottles of Côte du py I’ve had have been a little funky but very complex. This wine is fucked, sorry. I don’t see any redeeming features in it and I think it’s an example of ideology and ego trumping deliciousness in wine. I’d love for it to be an outlier but to me this goes beyond bottle funk and into the territory of simply yuck.

6/29/2018 8:24:00 AM - Interesting, thanks a lot for sharing. I had a 2010 3.14 a couple of years ago without noticeable brett or volatile (I do remember some reduction on opening but that quickly disappeared).
Makes me want to crack a 2014 open and see for myself. Will revert back to this thread.

6/29/2018 7:54:00 PM - I think my previous comment last night was coloured by a bit of drunkenness, and I clearly had my "natural wine rant" locked and loaded as I was a bit dissatisfied with how the wine was showing. Brett and VA in wines are more disappointing to me than TCA taint, because I know that at least these faults are somewhat preventable in winemaking.

Nonetheless, I saved some for today and it still looks fucked. Just not very drinkable at all. There's a level of Brett here which has completely stripped fruit from the palate. And it's horsey, pooey Brett too. I can see how Brett can be somewhat variable from bottle to bottle maybe, but this is really bad. I'm actually more sceptical about the VA being a bottle variation issue, as in my experience, it's usually an indication that something has gone wrong in the tank before bottling. But I must be wrong about that if the other notes here don't reflect it.
I have a bottle of 2013 of this that I was going to keep. But I'm certainly not going to shell out this kind of money again for this label. Thanks everyone for your comments!
