Wednesday, May 28, 2008 - My wife got me a nice Eisch decanter for my birthday and as an after thought a "final touch" aerator or a "flavor enhancer". I thank her for the decanter but said that the party gimmick will be returned for obvious reasons. However, my 2 year old son has other plans and torn apart the box. So I am stuck with the thing.

I have had a case of the 2001 vintage of this wine and several 2004. I have always detected a off color funky smell to it on first opening which mostly goes away after 1.5 hours detracting from the overall experience. Furthermore, I never quite understood the rave review of this wine. Well, I thought this would be a great test for this "flavor enhancer" to ameliorate the funky smell. OMG. This thing really works. A blast of dark cherry, blackberry. toasty oak, vanilla and pleasing subtle peppery aroma without a hint of the funky smell immediately satiated the senses. Afterwards, perhaps violet and even lavender made an appearance. Great acidity and balance. Firm tannin. Good length. I am not convinced if it is the "enhancer" that did the trick. Afterall, the new decanter (which is made from "breathable" glass) may have something to do with it. But wow. At least I am on the same page with RP and JM now. Outstanding.
