1986 Château Lafite Rothschild

Sunday, September 16, 2018 - I have had this wine three times. The first was in 1996, and while completely undeveloped it had the greatest concentration of any young wine I can remember. Strangely the second bottle was in 2002, and seemed complete ready. As these '86s were so brawny and tannic that seemed odd, but a good friend of mine said he had a similar experience with the '86 Mouton, so perhaps there was a window of drinkability.

My last bottle was in 2004 and was shut down tight and was almost Cali Cab like. Again my Mouton friend told me the same thing. After that, with the price going through the stratosphere, I decided to pass.

If I'm going to spend that kind of money I'm drinking a '90 Cheval Blanc.

9/17/2018 9:41:00 AM - Oh are very fortunate to able to drink this prestigious wine 3 times. All I would say is like 1986 Mouton. Personally I won’t touch these for another decade or so. 86 Mouton like 82 will outlive us all. Unless your 10yrs old today. As a member of the Commanderie de Bordeaux I can say 1986 Lafite is a monster and patience is required big time. As with Mouton it will out live us all. If you have lots I suggest you save that up. By the way 1990 Cheval Blanc is truly sublime
