2002 Wendouree Shiraz Mataro

Friday, August 2, 2019 - Tasted alongside the new 2017 Shiraz Mataro. Same medium to light shading as the new wine, but with browning to brick hues of a 17 year old.

A woodsy, asphalt, cola, autumnal nose with blackberries and plum underneath. Dark toned.

The palate’s brighter and takes off. More blackberry fruited with savoury seasoning. It exudes warmth (mature ripe fruit, not alcohol heat), the softened tannins combine with the fine line and length to create a deeply comfortable palate. Black fruits with leather tinges kept building in depth nine hours after opening and continued on the second night. Drinking well but the way it kept evolving, and Wendouree’s pedigree, suggests another ten years. A fabulous example of why you collect and cellar wine, especially Wendouree.
