Saturday, May 23, 2020 - The 21st wine of our month long wine tour of Italy. We've entered Umbria and are greeted tonight with two Paolo Bea selections. I was introduced to Bea wines probably twenty years ago by my buddy Tom and the wines never disappoint. I'm not a Bea Geek by any stretch -- far from it. But, the name and label are so distinctive that I'll pick one off the shelf in a wine shop without knowing much more about it. Ignorance of varietal and vineyard can be bliss in case of Bea wines.

First up is Lapideus, from the Latin "made of stone." This Trebbiano would more popularly be known today as an orange wine. I haven't been a big fan of the orange trend. The orange wines we've had so far on our tour -- from Liguria -- have been a bit too funky for my taste. The Lapideus is far more approachable. Close your eyes and you would see a different color.

A citrus nose of grapefruit, orange and lemon with plenty of acidity in the mid-palate. The color of apricots or maybe diluted apple juice without any foam. An unctuous finish to top things off. A glass and half of the Lapideus and you're ready to move on.
