Friday, November 21, 2008 - Argiano tasting (Wine What Else): Even more Brunello de Montalcino like than the 2002. An excellent wine from an excellent vintage – this was a clear step up from the 2002 and several ahead of the 2005. Really complex, layered nose, showing pepper, dark, dark fruit like plums and sweet candied black cherries, some nuttiness, savoury meat and a lifted, briary thorn-bush aspect. Beautiful on the palate, which was at once dense and rich and yet clean and elegant, with a real sense of integration and balance between its open, expansive black fruit character, again replete with plums and dark cherries, and its lithe structure of fresh acid and fine tannins. I felt that there was quite a bit of power in this wine, yet it came across more as elegant and focused, yet absolutely singing away in the glass. Someone called it an opera of flavours, an Italian symphony. Finish was just a little shorter than the 2002, which had great length, but was rounder and more complex, with delicious cherry flavours lingering at the sides of the mouth and the back of the tongue. A very classy wine.
