2012 Ovid Red Wine

Thursday, September 24, 2020 - Was drinking Ovid tonite. First thought was an ‘08. MSUWright’s note inspired this copycat 2012 pull for HTX’s first fall-feeling (<75F, no oppressive humidity) evening since April—thanks Beta!

3 hr decant. Oak and tannins integrated and this is ready to go. Nose of intense floral perfume, dried flowers, blood iron, graphite, forest/pine, brine/saline, plums, faint candied fruit, sage, cedar, pencil lead—lots going! Just simply a lot of fun, swirling and keeping my nose in the glass.

Intense on the palate but in no way overly so. Quite balanced. Plum and dark fruit attack the palate up front, moving into smooth flowing dried acidic red fruit on a long finish with a touch of eucalyptus. No hard/sharp edges.

First glass was a 97 got better and best with 4 hrs air, 99. I really tried to find a realistic flaw here, without success. Why no 100? Palate preference and reluctance to hand out the Benjamin. I’m a hardass. What does a number matter BTW? This wine is freakin awesome, what more more do you want —this note tells you what you need to know.

This is Pritchard Hill at its best. And this ‘12 blows away the ‘08s I’ve had. Drink up now with with a good decant—no hurry though, plenty of life left.

Side note, this wine is an example of CT utility at its finest, finding wines with open doors that I might otherwise have thought would be asleep. A closing thanks to MSUWine for inspiration!

I have surely been the beneficiary of CT utility, and I'm so glad to return the favor. Here's to open doors and all of that - cheers!
