Thursday, October 1, 2020 - Not particularly expressive on the nose—a bit of bruised apple, maybe a hint of sweet baking spices, but also a touch of a chemical smell, unfortunately. Not sure exactly what it reminds me of, but not very pleasant. A little better on the palate as the chemical side doesn't really manifest, and the texture is pleasantly rich and effervescent, with the same apple fruit and sweet cinnamon spice from the nose, balanced by a good spine of acidity and a bit of a mineral crunch. The spice flavors dominate the finish, leaving behind an attractive, sweet aftertaste.
These Gruet sparklers are never spectacular, but they're also never bad, or anything other than good value. This is not one of the best bottles I've had due to the chemical note, but once that blows off a bit, it's a decent bubbly for a low price.
