Tuesday, December 8, 2020 - Nice surprise and a classic Spanish wine that is excellent from a price to quality POV. Medium ruby in color with some garnet at the edge. Takes a little for the nose to show it’s medium intensity of red fruits - red plum and raspberry. Nice notes of dried herbs and light white pepper spice too. No idea what oak regiment it has had but secondary notes of cedar and even a touch of tertiary hint of wet leaves and maybe caramel? Palette is dry, medium acidity and low tannin. Medium alcohol, medium + body and flavors of raspberry. Medium finish. Overall still very fresh despite 5 years in age, while revealing some nice depth and great complexity. If you can be patience when opening let it do it’s stuff - this wine is all about the nose - it takes about an hour to really shine. Two hours on and the leather and spices really show on the nose: lovely! Overall great stuff at less than $20 a bottle makes this fab value. Going to keep hunting for more medium aged Mencia from Bierzo.
