2001 Château Haut-Bailly

Likes this wine:

Saturday, February 27, 2021 - 12.5% alcohol. The cork is not that long, but it perfectly elastic and it shows no wine penetration whatever; some modest tartrate deposits. Decanted an hour ahead. Dark colour with some fading but no bricking at the edge of the rim.
Very good complex nose with fresh ripe dark berries; very fresh, yet mature and harmonious. The best thing about the mouth is its outstanding smoothness, including a creamy feel in the mid palate; not that the fruity flavours are lacking in any way. Classy and harmonious with very good grip; I don't get the smoky hot brick flavours that often come with Pessac, but so what. No direct perception of oak, although there is no doubting its influence in polishing the tannins.
A gloriously elegant Bordeaux, and a superb companion to our lamb cutlets.
Fine to drink now but capable of much longer ageing.
