Saturday, February 23, 2019 - A birth year wine for the Scion and our very first opening of her case of wine. A 5.5 hour slow-ox opening seemed to do the trick. On the initial pour, the Scion exclaimed, “It’s an old red brick color,” and so it was. The initial nose was a tired cassis with some tobo. Within minutes the color was deepening to plum and the nose revealed a brighter cassis and tobo warehouse. By dinnertime, the rim was black plum while the luminescent cored appeared magenta. Bright cassis, spicy tobo, mint, cedar cris-cross the palate on attack and mid-palate while licorice and mineral carry the finish. The body is full without being New World big. It’s weight is much heavier than the Druet Grand Mont of the same vintage served side by side (and frankly, no comparison). The depth and complexity cannot be denied. The tannins are almost, but not quite yet fully resolved. A smidge of sediment appeared in the shoulder of the bottle and a fair amount in the final pour. 13% alc. Roasted beef tenderloin under bacon with horseradish sauce on the side for Phoebe’s belated birthday celebration. Highly Recommended.
