Monday, March 14, 2022 - A recent auction purchase that filled a rare gap in my Rhys cellar. Cost me less than the release price all in. Sometime in the early to mid-10s is when I think the Rhys syrah program really stepped up their game, and before that, it seems like a decidedly more mixed bag, as they seemed to be tweaking their style to find their groove. A rather subdued, submissive nose, and it took a lot of swirling to coax out some herbal, shoe leather, flint and raspberry notes. Wild strawberry, sour cherry and red currant flavors, some floral notes, and an almost Burgundian, Savigny-like tart red fruit profile. Elegant, pretty, light-bodied syrah, which finishes with biting dry tannins that softened considerably on day 2. I see how some could be underwhelmed by this wine, as it is not one to overpower, but it is nonetheless lovely in its understatedness.
