Saturday, March 7, 2009 - After a 2005 J.L. Chave St. Joseph this is undeniably bigger and a bit ponderous, although it is blasphemy for me to criticize one of Bob's wines. This is a tough comparison of two wines from dramatically different terroirs. Loads of menthol, licorice, smoke, tar and sweet black fruit. This is packed and concentrated but without going far over the edge. Rather, this is just what Washington gives, a LOT of ripeness. Bob does manage to bring a lot of complexity to the table with a meaty wine that screams of Syrah. This is much more expressive than when I tasted it last Spring, and it could really use 5-10 to settle down. No gangly elbows here, just a big, young wine that needs time to settle.
