90 Points

Monday, July 11, 2011 - France 2011 - Côte d'Or; 7/8/2011-7/13/2011 (Beaune): Tasted at the Domaine. For this bottling Nicolas used 30% whole bunches. The profile here is much different than the prevous two Volnays with loads of blackberry and blueberry aromas on the nose. This profile carries onto the palate with compact flavours and a dense mouthfeel. It finishes long with nice minerality and there is quite a bit of structure here. Not a lot of Volnay typicity showing but an excellent wine nonetheless. Those who really love the general style of the 2009 vintage will probably like this wine more than I do at this stage. It will be very interesting to try this masculine wine in 7-10 years to see how it develops—at which point my score may prove to be quite conservative. Excellent. 90+
