Sunday, May 25, 2014 - Five Cappellano Baroli with Piedmont inspired cuisine: Poured alongside the '06 Pie Franco. Initially this was showing some aromas of stinky feet, but luckily this did wind up blowing off. However, nothing aromatically really developed. I was surprised how muted this remained throughout the night no matter how many times I went back to smell it. The palate was more expressive, and enters immediately puckering, with very clean red fruit expressed. Quite tart, with building fruit as its held on the palate. Lovely layers of fruit open up the longer its held. The finish immediately slams you with tannins, but if you can see through that, you then get beautiful fruit. Very lovely, soft fruit, but wow those tannins are massive! Perhaps the "coolest" tasting of the night.

8/15/2014 8:24:00 PM - Nice notes, though i would have expected the wines to show better. I am really shocked that someone who appears to have your knowledge would ask if piedmontese cuisine is uninteresting. It is simple but some of the best in Italy. When you are there try La Ciau del Tornavento, Trattoria della Posta, Bovio and La Libera and you will see.

8/15/2014 8:47:00 PM - Thanks for the comment. I too expected the wines to show better... they were quite surprising. My comments on cuisine was intentionally silly, primarily due to the lack of good resources for recipes. That said, it is true that I don't find Piedmont cuisine as interesting as many other areas, even if there's plenty of satisfying meals.

I'm still working through my backlog of notes (these from May). We did have a wonderful two hour + visit at Cappellano during our stay. Those notes are to come. The wines (barrel samples and a few young ones) showed much better. Bovio was probably our finest meal in the Barolo district. Such attention to detail, fantastic flavors, and amazing service. Honestly della Posta wasn't very inspired for our meal... we did the multi course option and only found one or two dishes compelling while most others were nearly bland. All told though, our stay around Barolo (primarily the visits) was amazing! I'll have the notes (primarily stories and photos of the visits) up in the coming weeks...
