Tuesday, September 16, 2014 - Evidently the drinking public in my hometown does not appreciate a 2009 Ribera Del Duero, as we found this on the close out shelf of our favorite local retailer. To me, this is still in it's youth. When pouring into the decanter, there was big dark cherry, caramel, and smoky oak. A little research reveals they used some American oak, probably medium heavy toast, which explains the caramel on the nose. There is a very nice combination of "New World" fruitiness and "Old World" earthy, mineral rusticity. The color is dark purple, but not all that opaque. The bottle age has helped everything integrate, while the black cherry fruit is still exuberant. The acid and tannins taste mature, but at this time perfectly accompany the fruit. The black cherry finish lingers for minutes.
