85 Points

Saturday, December 31, 2011 - Typically, the Robert Mondavi Private Selection series gives good, and sometimes great value for the money. For my palate, the blends are usually the most interesting, with the single varietals, possibly excluding the Cabernet, a little less interesting. This Zinfandel, while pretty good, does not really excite. They got the color right. And, the brambly, blackberry and dark cherry fruit is basically vibrant and correct. What I don't like is the creamy, leesy taste on the mid palate. They tried to bring some character and depth, but I would prefer the pure Zinfandel fruit profile. It just seems too heavy in an artificial sort of way. Just barely enough, probably manipulated acid to balance. Whatever oak used is already integrated, as is the alcohol. Not terrible, some people would really like this.
