Thursday, November 28, 2019 - $30 holiday sale at Binnys. The pinot meunier tutti fruity sweety dominates the nose, and also briefly on entry, which is the role of pinot meunier - add some fruitiness to the wine. After that the wine offers little as it glides into a considerable finish. Bubbles yes. Flavor interest no. There is a reason pinot meunier is not a noble grape, and this wine I think reinforces why. The grand marque champagne bruts come and go in terms of quality for a variety of reasons - vintages and demand for starters. Piper was in the hunt several years ago, not now. The one grand marque champagne I follow that seems to always stay up there is Henriot, especially if you give it six years or so in the cellar.
By bedtime the bloying fruitiness of this wine was much more pronounced on the palate suggesting perhaps a heavy hand with the dosage as well.
Not at all to my liking.
