Monday, May 30, 2016 - Interesting to re-visit this after three years. Deep, opaque ruby (unfiltered and unfined) with some garnet on the rim. The nose is clean, with ripe black fruit (blackberry, plum), ripe blueberries, herbs, alcohol and a hint of vanilla and baking spices. The nose is medium in intensity and developing. The palate is dry, but with a fair amount of fruit, balanced by medium (+) acidity. The alcohol is high at 15.8%. The tannins are still medium to medium (+), polished and drying. The flavors are consistent with the nose, with the addition of some savory spice and licorice. This is full-bodied, with medium (+) flavor intensity and medium (+) length on the slightly bitter finish. Overall, this is a nicely balanced, age-worthy wine which is just a little too fruit-forward and too high in alcohol to hail from the Old World. Nevertheless, it is more of a food wine than a cocktail wine, given its power and opulence. It is drinking well now, but has plenty of life left.
