Monday, October 12, 2009 - Yet to be let down by Vieux Telegraphe. Nose: Licorice/sarsaparilla/root beer, fig sauce, cherry liquer, tar, char siu, and cocoa. Dark, brooding, and never stops showing - I could sit here nosing it all night. Palate: Licorice, chocolate, mint, sugary figs, kirsch, raspberry liquer... and this is all up front. A second wave of licorice, then tar on the mid-palate followed by some very nicely balanced tannins and acid. Long finish... 45+ seconds. This VT is definitely more tar than fruit. Less so than the 2003 and much richer, and way more delicious, but not nearly as fruited as the whopper that is 2006. I need to fill in the gap and drink the 2005 to see who the winner is. The 2004 is drinking really nice right now though.
