Sunday, December 3, 2006 - Tasted side by side with the 1998 and 1994 VT (see TNs), all three showed beautifully tonight. The 2004 was decanted for 3+ hours before we tried it. The person who decanted it said the nose was pretty tight when he first popped it, and certainly by the time we tried it the wine had opened up nicely...TN: Fairly open, expressive nose of ripe, slightly spicy red fruit, with a note of cocoa. On the palate, slightly brambly, with seemingly darker fruit than the nose had suggested, as well as elements of cocoa and garrigue. Nicely balanced. Impressive. I was more impressed with this (recently shipped) bottle than I was with the '04 when I tried it at the domaine in June '06 (see TN). Side by side, the '04 did not have the same depth and underlying minerality as the '98, but it did show a somewhat similar red fruit profile. FWIW, the '94 was showing great, it's in an evolved, open state, offering a gorgeous interplay of fruit and decay. It would be nice to see the '04 showing like the '94 in 10 years...
