Friday, June 3, 2016 - First off, this is an impressively broad 2010 Washington syrah. Popped the cork and let sit out for 2 hours. Nose: This is savory stuff. There's the dark cherry and blackberries, but there's also a ton of blood, cured pork (or even mortadella) and olive brine. If this were a blind sniff-off, this is a dead ringer for northern Rhone. Definitely French. The only Washington giveaway is the graphite and strong smoke. Palate: coming a bit closer to Washington here. Lush, full bodied. Medium plus acidity, mild sweetness. Fully integrated tannins, this has a solid but soft structure. Washington iodine here as well. Moving French-ward, there's olive tapenade, pork belly and sage. Hint of blood orange. Other fruits include cherry, blackberry and dark plum. With extended air, a strong dose of cigar tobacco develops. Finish: the palate profile persists for a decent amount of time, losing no components. This is great juice drinking brilliantly right now, absolutely no need to sit on this any longer. Give it a solid hour decant and use the time to prepare to be impressed. Worth an extra point on the score for the value and the skill in producing this profile from a blend of vineyards from across a decently large AVA. Major props.
