1966 Château Léoville Las Cases

Thursday, May 18, 2023 - This was a particularly good bottle of the '66, opened for my 40th birthday. The nose was a little quiet, but started expressing banana bread, moss, ripe plum, flowers, and a little mint after a few minutes. This was silky and soft on the palate with filigreed tannins, sweet, delicate fruit, including ripe plum, blackberry, and raisin. More of the mint came through, as did a note of soil. There was surprisingly little cedar, and quite a bit of a floral hit. Very pretty and elegant. I would have guessed this to be from Margaux if I hadn't known, to be honest. Wonderful wine. Charming, mature Bordeaux character, elegance, and open for business.

5/19/2023 1:09:00 PM - Thanks for your great note. What a way to celebrate your birthday! I am a big fan of '66, which perhaps offers the best QPR among 40+ year old vintages. Beychevelle and Giscours also made great wines in this year and Domaine de Chevalier is a legend. Judging from your profile notes and palate preferences, I bet we've probably bid for some of the same wines at auction. Cheers!
