Tuesday, December 15, 2009 - Mid shoulder fill. The cork fell into the bottle despite attempts to prevent this. Poured into a decanter 15 minutes before tasting. Medium deep blood-ruby hue, faintly hazy. Fresh, invigorating bouquet of juniper berries, mulling spices, rosemary, orange peel, and sweet earth. "Like a Christmas wreath," my friend exclaimed. On the palate, a First Growth level of silky smooth refinement. Flavors of red currants and black tea, with roasted cashews emerging after a while. Elegant and classy. There was a persistent mustiness with this wine that did not detract too much. I wonder if that was caused by the moldy cork falling into the bottle, but it was only in contact with the wine for less than a minute. The wine faded quickly and became noticeably bitter after 45 minutes.
