Friday, August 4, 2017 - Over the last few years, I've drifted away from the Roar portfolio, save the Rosella's bottling. Too big, too sweet, too fruity, too obvious. Maybe the cold year, with many wines not reaching ripeness actually helped this time. It's not shy or reticent, but I didn't feel I was being beat over the head with some weird mix of cab pretension and grenache fruitiness for a change. Smoky, earthy, while still carrying those heady aromas and a nice mix of red fruit, mostly in the currant area but occasionally veering into the strawberry and raspberry (okay, a little incursion on grenache's territory). I also detected enough stuffing to think this might last, and I'd predict more earth, mushroom, truffle-y goodness if it does. I'll hang onto that second bottle and see, since this is only improving with time.
