Monday, June 29, 2020 - for many years i have considered the best Penfolds wine made in such a difficult year like 1989 to be the St Henri. although an 89 Grange is a still a lovely drink. this st henri bottle did not disappoint. at 31 years of age it was still a deep crimson and a very pure nose of dark red fruits with a touch of sweet spice. pure expression of the aroma of the wine without the influence of new oak or bombarded in the winemaking. Tannin structure was simply superb. whereas some older granges can be still so dry and tannic ( like 81) this was almost ladylike. it glided down the throat like velvet with a seamless long sweet finish. an under rated wine and worth seeking out good bottles.
