93 Points

Sunday, August 28, 2016 - Mugnier's 1990 Bonnes Mares is aging gracefully. A bouquet of red and black fruit, woodsmoke, dried herbs, venison and dark soil tones is followed by a wine of notable power, volume and savoury intensity on the palate, with some fine structuring tannins in evidence and nice chalky minerality. Blind, the wine's sauvage qualities and its power allied with tension led me to Ruchottes-Chambertin, and to the 1993 vintage as 1990 torrefaction isn't an issue here.
