Thursday, January 31, 2013 - Nose: Rich, deep, and a little earthy. A casual amount of fruit, prunes, dates, pears. The earthiness is something between graphite, dry cigar wrappers, and clay earth. Baking spices are there, and nearly like banana nut bread. Cool sawdust shavings, cinnamon, and maybe some orange-color fruit. It's got an ester-y profile, too, showing that this is definitely young and could stand to age a bit more (room to grow).

Palate: Spirity, and a bit of wood at the forefront. Underneath the tannins is a very lovely layer of honey, quince, pepper, cinnamon, purple grapes, and subtle frosting. Some of the same earthy notes from the nose.

Finish: The interplay between the bitter wood (slight) and the nominal sweetness is very fine. Still a bit of fruit, graphite, and earthy qualities (it adds depth). The alcohol is a bit out of step at points, and the wood a bit heavy at others, but it's still very good, and would be superb with just a few more years of age.
