Thursday, June 25, 2020 - With roasted shoulder of lamb and some homemade succotash we opened a 2012 Troplong Mondot. 90% Merlot apparently, and it shows. The nose is expressive of dark sweet berries and chocolate, the color is deep dark purple, on the palate it is quite mellow and balanced. Not too alcoholic or oaky, quite modern but not cloying. It dies after the attack as the mid palate is hollow and the finish is weak. It is decent enough and harmless enough, has a little acidity that allows it to stand up to the lamb but frankly for the price one can do much better.

I think 2012 St Emilions are quite open and accessible and I am not sure if they will improve much. My problem is the style of those I've had so far has been a little too mellow and insipid. Good wines to share with the non geek California crowd to show how a wine can be sweet and have a little acidity at the same time, all without the alcohol burning the back of your throat
