Monday, September 26, 2016 - Disappointed with this wine based on initially somewhat high expectations - 1st of 4 bottles acquired at our CC cellar clearance sale and hoping this is an off bottle and not actually indicative of the current condition of this wine, if next one not much better may designate the last 2 bottles for cooking. This bottle is not a good QPR wine even at our significantly reduced price point. A very interesting wine, consistently one of the flagship bottlings from Chile's Valdivieso region and done in a typical sherry "solera" style with each bottling 50% that year's new blend and 50% from the ongoing solera so by definition this is NV - this #5 crazy horse edition was released in '04 with the 1st release (and start of the current solera) being in '94. Dark red with some bricking, thin, medium bodied, relatively little fruit left and thus surprisingly acidic and no significant aftertaste detectable at all. Nose thin, sharp and acidic with little fruit and some black pepper present. Very little fruit left on the palate as well although dark cherry was notably present - flavor profile more acidic then expected with more secondary earthy notes of granite, leather and tobacco present. This wine was not initially off or corked or actually flawed in any way although by the 2nd night it was despite refrigeration - just hoping this was an off bottle and that the remaining bottles are truly not this far past prime / over the hill. Not recommending this wine right now based on this 1st bottle - hope to be able to change that with next bottle.
