Saturday, April 1, 2023 - 2008 Herdade do Mouchão Vinho Regional Alentejano Tonel 3-4 Alicante Bouschet, Alentejo, Portugal (14.5%, 4 years in 5,000 litre barrels and 4 years in bottle before release, 6 hours decanting before the initial sip). Alicante Bouschet, which is the result of breeding between Grenache (known as Alicante in southern France) with a teinturier (dye or stain) grape called Petit Bouschet, produces a fruit-forward Shiraz/Zinfandel like drop. Dark, nebulous purple…even a bright light in the background does not change the view…more dense than The Donald or Sleepy…or their supporters for the position of the next tenant in the White House. Aromas of black cherries, blackberries, a touch of black pepper, and savoury oregano…powerful to the point you can feel almost bark-like punchiness on the nose. Well-structured, euphoric tannins with mammoth juiciness that was a formidable companion to my Juicy Lucy burger and Mac ’n Cheese from Chunky. Tonight, this Mouchão is a 4+ hour sip that could lay down for decades to come…if you possess the mean-spirited virtue known as patience…I do not.
