Thursday, November 23, 2017 - Opened with friends for dinner alongside a 1999 Cos d'Estournel and a 2012 Alto Moncayo Garnacha. It was super tight immediately after opening and I was worried it wasn't going to taste well for dinner guests. Those fears were unwarranted as immediately after decanting the wine opened up beautifully. Although it's a new world wine, I didn't find it so fruit forward that it was in another league from the cos d'estournel. They complimented each other well although it was apparent that the tref probably isn't quite in drinking window while the cos was. The tannins where still very bold so I see room for improvement over the next 5 years. Having tasted this, I won't touch my 2011 tref reserve until 2021+
