Sunday, November 13, 2022 - 95 points may seem like a lot, but this Cru Bourgeois earned every one. Recently picked up 4 bottles of the '03 after being blown away by an '03 Ducru Beaucaillou. Seriously, that stuff stopped me in my tracks.
Anyway, I sought some 2003s because the vintage has a reputation for being hot and dry and fruit-forward. This bottle lived up to the hype.
Decanted for sediment but poured immediately. The nose was other-worldly without delay. Leaping out of the glass were scents of blueberry, plum, cassis, blackberry bramble, Spanish cedar, leather, and graham cracker. A slight fig scent, but not pruning--still showing too young for that.
Palate is a showstopper. Chock full of black fruit, dark chocolate, leather. Sweet, chewy tannins that could use more time to settle but this is frankly incredible right now. Acidity is perfectly balanced--providing life but not converting this into a sour-red-fruit ordeal.
