2003 Château Sociando-Mallet

Community Tasting Note

Likes this wine:

Sunday, February 25, 2018 - 13% alcohol. CS 55%, M 40%, CF 5%. The cork is one of the shortest that I have ever seen on a quality Bordeaux, but it shows no significant wine penetration. Decanted 90mn ahead. The colour is dark right up to the edge of the rim.
Rich classic nose of Médoc, with dark berries and some tobacco. The mouth is just as good, combining bright fruit (mostly blackcurrant), a juicy character and a smooth finish. Excellent balance and no sign of austerity here. No oak taste and no protruding tannins, although the wine does not lack grip.
A splendid Médoc in its optimal drinking window (good for another five years, I would say); this bottle seems to me to be even better than the famed 1990 (of which I have had my fair share). I feel that there is something unique here as the opulence of the vintage fights against the tendency towards austerity of the cru to produce something close to a perfect balance.
An outstanding success, and a repeat purchase in ripe years.
