2003 Château Sociando-Mallet

Community Tasting Note

Likes this wine:

Saturday, July 4, 2020 - 13% alcohol. CS 55%, M 40%, CF 5%. The cork is above average in length and superbly dense. No wine penetration at all; some tartrate deposits on the cork and in the neck. Decanted for an hour. The colour is deep with some thinning but hardly any fading at the edge of the rim (I am a little bit cagey here because I am not using my usual (GG) glass following a breakage).
Very good bright fruity nose dominated by blackcurrant. The mouth is equally impressive, very vivid and with good grip. Silky mouthfeel. There is a slightly bitter kick in the finish, and that may put some people off, but I don't mind it as it comes late, it gives structure to the wine, and it is a reminder that S-M is an honorary St Estèphe. At the same time, there is something sweet here (not sugary). An unusual combination.
A very good wine for those who can put up with a bit of spine. Nothing soupy here. Looks like it is at the start of its life. Could take a longer decant perhaps.
