Monday, September 28, 2009 - Blind on the nose, I'd guess an 03 Northern Rhone as it reminds me of some recent 03 Cornas. You can smell the ripeness - not exactly pruney, but close, with wild notes of kippered beef, wet fur, brown sugar, cigar smoke and road tar. Completely over the top, and coming from me that says a great deal. Dense and uncomfortably rich fruit with a lavish, mammoth amount of oak, plenty of unresolved tannins, and lots of booze. The tannins suggest that it will age, but given the amount that I suspect are from wood, the wincingly intense fruit, and the booze, I'm unclear as to what this may turn into. The color is a dark purple with NO signs of age. Oily, thick, and chewy. As odd as it may sound, I think the bottle is correct with some components that are indicative of a well-made wine; but in context and in the aggregate, the results are atrocious. Capped and set aside. (NR)
