Thursday, October 16, 2014 - Aged in 3,000-liter Slavonian oak bottis and Swiss oak tonneaux.

Translucent, luminous red cherry color with subtle bricking towards the rim. Rich, ripe and very aromatic nose with expressive and somewhat sweet aromas of cherry marmalade, juicy red fruits, some toasty wood spice, a little bit of truffle, a lifted hint of sweet balsamico and a touch of alcohol. The wine feels very ripe and medium-to-moderately full-bodied on the palate with intense and more savory than sweet flavors of ripe dark cherries, earthy herbal tones, some sweet oak spice, a little bit of tar, a hint of brambly raspberry and a touch of truffle. As is typical of 2009 Barolo, the acidity feels medium-to-moderate with ample but also quite ripe and gentle tannins. The finish is long rich and expressive with flavors of ripe dark cherries, some jammy red fruits, a little bit of sour cherry bitterness, a hint of savory oak spice and a touch of tar.

This wasn't particularly big for a Barolo, as opposed to the normally quite weighty 2009's, but still the wine was very rich, round and fruity as most of the wines from this vintage have been. Overall the style was quite nice here, but the wine was perhaps a tad too sweet and soft for my taste. Especially the tannins were very gentle, both for a Barolo di Serralunga and for Rivetto's style. An enjoyable, early-drinking Barolo from the ripe end. Most likely can develop some more in a cellar, but due to its quite gentle nature, this will never be a long distance runner. Perhaps a bit on the expensive side for the style at 43,90€.
