93 Points

Tuesday, August 4, 2015 - Cracked the cork on this knowing full well it was too early, but in the name of science it had to be done! Restrained notes of kirsch, black cherry liqueur, raspberry, blueberry, bramble, underbrush, and chalky limestone. Fairly silky texture, with a bit of a talc-like clip on the finish. I was actually surprised at the lack of expected alcohol coming from this wine; I figured there would be more tannic power. I also expected more upfront fruit and spice profiles (based on my experience with past Saxum wines), but this was not showing off any flashiness in those arenas either.

Not in that "Wow" phase at the moment for me, as the fruit seems to be still working things out with the other components; time in bottle will be the deciding factor as to whether or not this wine will sit with some of Smith's greats. Extremely well made wine, with just enough personality to make you wonder what will become of it. I don't see this offering much full, complete flavor until well after 2018. 93+ at this stage for me.
