Sunday, January 12, 2020 - This is only my 5th tasting of a Saxum wine (and the 3rd James Berry bottle) so I don't have a depth of experience with this producer though I've been collecting from the mailing list. I'm still curious how these age and if they develop any secondary characteristics so I popped the oldest one in my cellar last night. Gave it a 2+ hour decant and had with dinner of lemon-garlic grilled salmon.
Very dark purple and a decent nose of blackberries this wine was smooth on the palate despite the high ABV. Best part was a lingering finish but I still found it very fruit forward without any secondary notes.
As a reference I had a 2010 St Cosme Gigondas last week that was stunning and it had those earthy, forest floor secondary notes that add complexity to a wine. Well I have some 14, 15 and 16's to hold for awhile as most of the TN's suggest.
