90 Points

Friday, August 9, 2013 - Cork pushed out a few millimetres (or not pushed in far enough?), very good level (into neck), no signs of any seepage; cork firm and extracted without difficulty. Mature but lively appearance, bright red core; rather modest nose even after several hours in the decanter, nothing of the customary Graham richness and sweetness, relatively dry and cedary, feels muted, empty even - and is there perhaps just a hint of TCA? On the palate vibrant and juicy but with a relatively light weight, again drier than expected, no faults but not consistent with previous notes either; rather light finish of decent length only. Still an adequate port but I have had much better bottles of this. First of a case - I hope this is a fluke! (89). Returned to the bottle after four hours and retasted after two days. Has opened up a bit and now displays a mature, liquorous cherry and milk chocolate character, with a nice hint of Cognac. This represents a marked improvement but still nowhere near what this VP should be capable of. (90)
