Monday, October 28, 2019 - From (free!) glass. Woogh, the nose: deep, deep coconut and an elegant red nail polish. Ok, that's fanciful, but there was overall a bizarre, compelling kind of "sexy/hollow" quality to the wine - a painted lady with an appeal both overcoming and consisting in her artiface. I guess the nail polish also connects with a sherried aspect to the nose and palate, both a salty sandalwood and an older, mild molasses quality in a much older Rioja I had recently. Anyway, back to more conventional things: cocoanut oakies, cassis, piquito pepper, plenty of tannin still there. Very young, very complex. Will age into something wirey and profound. Certainly fascinating and giving plenty of pleasure now.
